Steady donations have poured in for the official memorial service for David Book, the chief pallbearer for the body of Sir John Smith, which will be held later this month.
Buried in St Paul’s Cathedral, Sir John, who died on August 19, was the most senior Anglican clergyman to have died in the past 30 years. The funeral will be held on Saturday at 4pm.
And two days before the service, the Westfield RSPCA, which employs Mr Book as a vetinary technician, has been fundraising to pay for his £1,500-a-week funeral costs.
The fast-track funeral, which will include a hymn for Sir John’s gravestone, will take place at Sir John’s home, the family church, St Martin-in-the-Fields, and is expected to cost more than £3,000.
The RSPCA has also raised nearly £13,000 in the past five months towards Mr Book’s funeral, including £9,500 through donations from the public, and £3,000 from the local MP, Mike Weatherley.
Mr Book, who has worked for the charity for eight years, said the money had been coming in “continuously for five months”.
“It’s overwhelming,” he said.
“The support and kind words have been tremendous and I’m grateful. It’s the goodness and kindness of people.”
Mr Book, from Credenhill Road, said he had always hoped to pass on his skills to the public.
“It’s been brilliant – it’s been the greatest thing. I always hoped to pass my love and knowledge on to the public and now I can,” he added.
The RSPCA said it was “extremely grateful” to Mr Book. “He has been working tirelessly to make this possible for the charity,” it said. “We would like to offer our sincere thanks and warmest wishes to David for all of the good work he has done and the sense of kindness and compassion he has shown towards animals and the wider community.” -c – 4*o for c.
