The mild, chemical reaction of graphene oxide with 2-pyridylaldehyde (2-PAA) in basic media yielded the GQDs with a narrow size distribution of 1-2 nm under optimized conditions. The GQDs exhibited excellent solubility in almost all polar and non-polar solvents, and were stable in the solid state and up to 90 days in aqueous solution at room temperature. The GQDs showed two different emission behaviors; quantum yield: 0.15 and 0.19, depending on the solvent used, and steady state absorption and fluorescence emission spectra with maxima at about 360 nm and 470 nm, respectively. The GQDs revealed a relatively short charge transfer life time (τ) of 0.85 ns and a long luminescence lifetime of 8 ns in acetonitrile.
